Just a moment

London life, a dash of tango and a spoon full of sounds

Notting Hill Carnival

How often do you get 200 people outside a Best One convenience store dancing and jamming?

Branding London

Cool project for London: they are looking for some rebranding work for this fair city and are doing it openly on the web and it's all driven by the public.

Check it out and contribute: http://abrandforlondon.wordpress.com/
I think it's a great initiative...

Morning

Looking at what awaits me tomorrow is probably not befitting of a peaceful summer sunday evening! This is a great time lapse of different rush hour scenes in a typical weekday in London.

On a different note I have noticed I haven't been posting so much on my posterous lately. I will try to remedy to this pronto. Enjoy the last crumbs of your weekend!

Looking at vintage bicycles again...

The weather being rather grim for a cycle ride, I am consoling myself by checking bikes on gumtree. Elswick is a classic brand from Humberside in England, yet in my opinion this town cycle would benefit from a more classy saddle and handles at the very least. What do you think?

All the things you are missing out on...

...when you move out of London.

In the 18th century, Samuel Johnson famously wrote about the city: “You find no man, at all intellectual, who is willing to leave London. No, Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford." To which I would maybe add: yet not everybody can afford to live in London ;)

The hills of Oporto

I was invited to a wedding of a good friend of mine, a lavish Indian Bollywood wedding in Portugal of all places! Complicated story but the reason why is that Gujaratis happen to have a diaspora everywhere and their people from Mozambique moved to Portugal in the late 70s after the independence.

Oporto is blessed with an incredible world heritage site on the banks of the river Douro, with on one side the quaint buildings of the old city and on the other side the numerous cellar where Port is aged and bottled. The whole picture is framed by the impressive bridge Don Luis famously designed by Eiffel (the guy from that somewhat  famous tower in Paris). And for a quiet relaxing break from all the ceremonies of an Indian wedding you can always dip your foot in the Atlantic with the beach a mere 10min ride from the city centre.

Notes on a few Rising Jazz Stars

I went to a wonderful triple bill concert last night at the Barbican part of their Blaze summer series. First off the very talented Yaron Herman trio: a little too proud technically in my opinion, I thought they were at their best with their quieter tunes. Hiromi was second in the line up and boy did she not disappoint. She is very sweet yet cheeky, engaging, superbly gifted and eminently huggable. Catch her if you can!

I would love to give you my thoughts on the third act, however we ran out for some of the best tapas in town across the river in Brindisa.

Londoner's weekend spot: Bournemouth

When you live in London there is a plethora of options for going away for the weekend without leaving the British Isles. One idea is to go down to Bournemouth in Dorset, roughly 2 hours drive down to the coast. Although the city centre isn't particularly interesting, you have got a huge sandy beaches to enjoy. The shore breaks are pretty popular with surfers, wind and kite surfers.

I would recommend walking to Mudeford Quays, almost by Christcurch. The tiny stretch of sand between river and sea is home of loads of cute little beach huts facing the Needles at the western tip of the Isle of Wight. Nice spot for a swim with a view!
