Just a moment

London life, a dash of tango and a spoon full of sounds

Bread, Ukulele, Volcada.

Three things I want to learn this year:

  1. Bread. I am decent cook, probably, but I don't know how to make bread. As a frenchman that almost makes it impossible for me to go back to my homeland ;)
  2. Ukulele. I need to put back some musical fun and the uke seems the way to go. And it's small and cheap.
  3. Volcada. It is in my opinion one of the most elegant and delicate word that one can dance in Tango.

Character

Lunfardo is in my opinion a magical language. There is hardened spanish colors married to italian melodies and every so often a word appears with french tones. Because I do not quite understand let alone speak this argentinian dialect, each word, each sentence hides a surprise to me. I feel a little bit like an explorer trying to unravel the mysteries of meaning and the new world metaphors layered in the letters...

FANFARRON (Tango)

II

¡Fanfarrón!,
en la mersa de los guapos
no arrimás ni por equivocación,
¡charlatan!,
vos vivís únicamante,
porque es muy buena la gente
y hay en el mundo un lugar.
No sabes,
que hasta el loro del vecino
aprendió a gritarte ¡fanfarrón!

Notes on Jamie Lidell

14th of December, long awaited concert in London and a full house for Jamie Lidell at the Sheperds Bush Empire. And what an amazing crowd for people watching! All sizes and styles represented: well-to-do bespectacled boho, grey haired bubbly pillar of the boozer, all-woolen alt chicks, a lone-singing muscle man, tight-knit bouncy family...

Now to the music. If you do not know Jami Lidell you are quite simply missing out. Check out Another Day or maybe start with a Little Bit of Feel Good, before you diversify and Multiply into his more sampled-dubbed-worked out crazy stuff. Jamie on stage is like a loose electron looking for some positive energy. Infectious stuff: if you can stop yourself from shakin' and bouncin' I salute you. I had been warned that this could be a great performance. They were right and then some. He keeps on churning out his great tunes but you don't just get a re spit of whatever got you going on his album. Oh no.There is something brewing, something being crafted before your eyes and that is quite simply beautiful.

Playful mouth

John Coltrane and Stan Getz playing around.

I know the quality isn't great, the sound is ruffled, the picture is gnarly. But the black and white contrast fits the tone and so does the slightly passe frame and angles. And as for the music you have got two distinct textures on display in symbiotic improvs. I find it mesmerising to watch these two giants' dabbling and teasing lips on the mouthpiece. Don't you want to have a chat with these guys?

Young(er) Wildlife Photographer

As usual for us around this time of the year, the family went up to the NHM for the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition.

This year I much preferred the youngest overall prize. It's called The Show and the composition is simply fantastic. The bemused bovine audience circles the unlikely couple of a rather annoyed-looking giraffe and the bragging lion who is probably secretly thinking: "how the hell am I supposed to strike that giant?"

Other photos that caught my eye: the battling eagles, the perfected landing, the treetops fractals,  the petals procession powered by ants, the golden outline of the polar bear...

Let me leave you with my favourite. Abrazo.

St Andrews day Ceilidh

Relaxed ceilidh atmosphere, loads of fun. Check out the Ceilidh club for more.

Best scottish moment of the night was when leaving and shortbread was being handed out at the door (genius). Guy at the door distributing the: "Shortbread dear?"
Wee Scottish lad: "Shortbread? Nah, I am going for a burger..."
